TAMIL REFUGEES

8.

Margaret O'Grady (Christian Aid) reported that a staff member had visited Tamil Nadu in late November. There were estimated to be about 100,000 Tamil Sri Lankan refugees in India, of which 25,000 27,000 were in camps. The Indian Government was providing a daily cash allowance and it was thought that there were no major groups who were not being reached.

In Sri Lanka, the situation of displaced persons was still fairly grim and their needs not adequately met.

As there was little time for further discussion, the meeting officially closed, allowing those members interested to talk further with Margaret O'Grady about the Tamil situation and others to meet and talk to Hel ga Ahmed who was running an embroidery project for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. She had brought samples of the work and was hoping to find a market for it as she could enlarge the project if an outlet for the products could be found.
