WHAT COSTS ARE REIMBURSABLE?

On request, UNHCR will reimburse shipowners for the subsistence of refugees on board ship, which will normally be calculated at US$5 per refugee per day. In addition, other expenditure arising as a direct result of rescue can be claimed.

Claims should be directed to the appropriate P & I Club which will examine and forward them to UNHCR. Shipowners not belonging to a P & I Club should submit claims directly to UNHCR Headquarters. All documentary evidence, including original receipts where appropriate, should be submitted with the claim.

The maximum amount reimbursed under any single claim should not normally exceed US$20 000. Only on an exceptional basis will claims in excess of US$20 000 be considered.
