E. DISABLED. MEDICALLY-AT-RISK REFUGEES AND VICTIMS OF TORTURE
1.
We are in the following paragraphs referring only to identified and documented cases processed for resettlement by UNHCR Headquarters. Refugees being Disabled, Medically-at-risk or Victims of torture also find resettlement without any particular attention from our Office.
2.
It may be of interest that 2,090 resettlement applications were forwarded to UNHCR Headquarters from the UNHCR field offices, during the period 1981-early 1986. For 1,517 families (6,827 persons), resettlement was obtained under regular or special programmes; 1,347 families (6,063 persons) have already arrived in the resettlement countries. At present 187 families (839 persons) are still awaiting departure, most of whom in South East Asian asylum countries.
3.
Out of the 2.090 applications received, 300 cases have not been processed as special cases for resettlement, either because the
ailments/handicaps the refugees suffered from where not severe, or because it was felt that they should rather benefit from existing local/regional facilities, as resettlement did not appear to be the best solution for them.

It is obvious that the Indochinese refugees have been the major preoccupation during the past five years.
