SWEDEN
Sweden channels all its
resettlement of refugees through UNHCR. 500 places out of Sweden's 1986 quota of 1250 may already have been allocated, in consultation with UNHCR, which we understand has asked
for priority to be given to refugees in Hong Kong. The Swedish
representative at the January UNHCR resettlement meeting confirmed that Sweden would accept a small additional number from Hong Kong in
1986. We understand that a list of 24 family reunion cases has been
passed to the Swedish authorities by UNHCR.
SWITZERLAND
The Swiss response to Our request has been that they are not in
a position to admit, for the time being, a new contingent of
Vietnamese refugees. However we understand that UNHCR's Hong Kong
representative has supplied the Swiss Consulate General there with a
list of 36 family reunion cases.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
US has indicated that it is considering maintaining its
previous Hong Kong off take of 1600 for its current fiscal year; we
believe that a final decision will await the report, expected
March, of the Ray Panel.
