Dr Meyer-Landrut,

6.

State Secretary at the Auswaeriges Amt, told Mr Eggar in November that, because the Länder were cautious about Far Eastern refugees and the controversy about the number (15,000 in 1985) of requests for asylum in FRG, it was difficult to push them to accept even those with very close family connections. The Embassy approached the

Auswaertiges Amt again in February. in the light of Hong

Kong's decision to absorb 250 refugees. The Germans

reiterated that they were now only prepared to accept refugees within the agreed criteria (close relatives in FRG,

ship rescue cases).
