PART I: VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG

Introduction

3. This part of the Select Committee's Report examined the problems presented by the large number of Vietnamese who, having left their country by various means and at various times, now find themselves in countries of temporary asylum. It paid particular attention to those in camps in Hong Kong, 4. As the Report noter), 961,000 refugees from the Indo-China region have been resettled since 1975, and resettlement continues. There are now over 19,000 Vietnamese settled in the United Kingdom, and more are still coming here: in 1984, 80 through ship rescues and 607 from Vietnam under the Orderly Departure Progranime. HMG welcome the Select Committee's recognition that Britain's record in accepting Vietnamese refugees is a good one, and accept the needs that the Committee identifies to revive the international resettlement programme; to reduce the burden on Hong Kong, and to re-unite those in the camps with their families here.

5. As the following paragraphs show, HMG are able to accept virtually all the measures that the Committee has proposed to meet these objectives.
