resettlement, more than in any other place of first asylum.
The refugees are spending increasingly long periods. in Hong
Kong: 60% have been there over 3 years.
Recent Initiatives

HMG has agreed to
resettle some 500 more refugees (40 per month), mostly from Hong Kong. To maximise the effect
of this we are pressing other countries to take more
refugees from Hong Kong. I t i s too early to know how many will accept more refugees (Australia and Canada have agreed
to take 200 and 50 more respectively).

Hong Kong agreed on 6 February to accept s ome 250
refugees (20 per month) from the camps, and to establish a
transit centre for refugees rescued at sea.
We are
instructing Posts, including Washington, to urge their hosts
