Dear Mary,
24
DENUNCIATION OF IL CONVENTION 26: APPLICATION TO NON-METROPOLITAN TERRITORIES
Since we have now had sight of most of the telegrammed replies from the territories concerning their self-governing powers with respect to the subject matter of Convention 26, we should proceed with some urgency to the next step.
The situation seems to be that for those who are not self-governing, the obligations of the convention will cease on June 14th 1986 as do those of the UK, unless they indicate they want the protection to continue.
Those who are self-governing in this respect must decide whether they want to denounce the Convention before June, 13th or it seems clear the ILO will consider they are still bound by its terms, despite the UK denunciation.
Will you write urgently to the territories, informing them that the UK has denounced Convention 26, and asking whether they wish to retain its protection and obligations. The opportunity for denouncing the Convention ceased on June, 13th
1986.
^
May we therefore have a reply by April 30th as we still have to approach the legal advisers for the best way to present this to the ILO.
