Of the 1984 total of 38,400 about 16,500 were officers and cadets

and 23,000 ratings.

37 The supply of UK seafarers for UK ships has followed demand,

with the demand for UK ratings not falling in proportion to the size

of the fleet because of displacement of foreign ratings. The

take-up of new entrants has fallen off substantially as total

employment has reduced in recent years.
