NOTES
Geral
Supply figures are for ships registered in the UK, except for Ro-Ro ferries, where a small number of ships on UK dependent territory flags but operating in UK waters have been included.
It is
refit. No allowance has been made for vessels in lay-up or not considered that these will significantly affect the ability to meet the need.
(1) (a) The requirement figures given in the table are for
UK/NATO plans. Requirements for national (non-NATO) contingencies are not specifically included in the table, but may be assumed to be well within the stated NATO requirements;
(b) 1985 supply figures are Department of Transport end-1985 assessments but do not differ significantly from equivalent 1985 forcasts in SEA Group Report;
(c) 1989 and 1992 supply forecasts are based on SEA Group Report.
(2) Other types of vessel are under investigation and a number of suitable vessels have already been identified in the offshore. support sector. (See also para 29a).
(3) The supply figures exclude vessels potentially suitable for the salvage role. Inclusion of requirements for sea-going vessels between 100 g.r.t and 250 g.r.t increases the defence requirement for 44 (as previously submitted) to 67. An additional requirement for 2 offshore support vessels for forward mine-counter measures support is under consideration.
12 of
(4) (a) 19 represents the revised total requirement which has
been expanded to include vessels up to 50,000 d.w.t. these 19 vessels will be required within 14 days, the additional 7 within a further 16 days.
(5)
(b) The main supply figures for 1985, 1988 and 1992 represent the numbers of UK registered vessels estimated to be within European waters and are thus readily accessible to meet the 14 day requirement. The bracketted figures are the total
It is numbers on the UK register, irrespective of location. likely that most of these would be accessible in less than 30 days. (see also para 29b).
The balance of requirement will depend upon circumstances, but an approximately equal split between ships 300 g.r.t to 1000 d.w.t and those 1000 d.w.t to 10,000 d.w.t may be assumed.

Requirements for passenger liners are currently under review, but there are currently no critical shortages against key requirements in this area.
