APPLICATIONS FOR FARE INCREASES FOR NEW TERRITORIES AND LANTAU TAXIS

Introduction
On 31 January 1984, having considered memorandum XCC (84)18, Members advised and the Governor ordered that the fares for the New Territories and Lantau taxis should be increased by 15%. The increase became effective on 8 February 1984. This memorandum seeks Members' advice on the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations 1986 at Annex A which will introduce further increases in fares for New Territories and Lantau taxis.

Applications for fare increases

In March 1985, eight New Territories taxi associations sent in applications for fare increases and collectively asked for a general fare increase of 19% for an average New Territories taxi trip of 2.8 kilometres. In May 1985, Lantau taxi owners submitted an application for an increase in fare scale to the same level as urban taxis, which would represent a 50% increase in fare for an average taxi trip of 10 kilometres on the Lantau Island. The existing fare scale and those proposed by the taxi operators are as follows :-
