Radiation Purification of Environmental Pollutants

Treatment of environmental pollution by means of ionizing

radiation is a new technology.

Purification Mechanism

Subject to ionizing radiation (e.g. Y-rays or electron

beams) moisture in environmental pollutants and harmful bacteria

and microorganisms will be excited and ionized, thereby releasing

highly active radiolytic products and free radicals which may be

strong oxidizing agents or reducing agents. With these agents,

pollutants can be decomposed through oxidation, denatured or poly-

merized so as to destroy the pathogens in the wastes.

Mode of Radiation

Common radiation sources are radioisotopes, cobalt-60 and

caesium-137, and accelerators.

Typical modes of radiation are can-type and foil-type,

using radioistopes and accelerators respectively as radiation sources.

Application

Most of the polluting substances in the three primary

environmental polluting sources waste gas, waste water and solid

waste can be treated with radiation. The application falls gener-

-

ally under the following categories :

Treatment of Water

1.

Decolorization, deodorization, sterilization of and

removal of foul taste from natural water bodies.
