The station reported that the Government was hoping that the safety report would be ready ahead of schedule because of public fears about the plant.

The SCM Post reported that Legislative Councillors gearing up for next week's debate on nuclear power will be ordered to cut short their speeches. The paper said it now seems certain that a five-minute restriction will be imposed on every councillor taking part in the debate. This is likely to anger a number of the members who have been demanding for a Daya Bay debate.

Sunday, October 12: The Sunday Post reported that a proposed campaign by HK anti-nuclear protestors during the Queen's visit to HK was last night cancelled.

A spokesman for the anti-nuclear group told the paper that they falt the proposed measures would not be effective.

Tuesday, October 14: A member of the Joint Conference for the Shelving of the Daya Bay Project, Trini Leung, told a press conference yesterday that many anti-nuclear groups overseas had expressed support for the anti-nuclear campaign in HK, the media reported.

Miss Leung said that according to the information she had collected during an international anti-nuclear conference in Vienna last month, many advanced industrial countries in Europe and the United States had abandoned nuclear energy for safety and environmental

reasons.

According to the Express, Miss Leung said her group was considering whether it was feasible to take legal action to stop the construction of the Daya Bay plant.

She criticised a Government official who recently attended a special conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna for hiding anti-nuclear remarks.

Another member of the group Fung Chi-wood said they would give a letter to Omelco this morning calling Legco members to move a motion asking the Government and China Light to release all studies and reports regarding the nuclear project.
