Saturday, November 1: In prominent coverage, the media reported that the Legco ad hoc group to monitor the Daya Bay project was planning to visit the site of the project in Shenzhen.

A member of the ad hoc group, Ngai Shiu-kit, said the group would keep a close watch on the construction of the plant and would carry out the proposals contained in the nuclear report by Legco's fact-finding delegations to Europe and the US, the media reported.

The media also gave good coverage to remarks by a Japanese scientist, Dr Sadao Ichikawa, who said in his speech yesterday that the Daya Bay plant would pose a threat to HK people.

Some papers quoted a Government spokesman as saying that the Financial Secretary would release a detailed report on Daya Bay next week. The report would contain information on why HK needed nuclear power, the guarantee on buying nuclear electricity, a comparison between nuclear power and coal-fired power and the safety aspect of the Daya Bay plant.

The HK Commercial Daily reported that the report would not touch on the calculation of nuclear power charges.

A few papers quoted the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Graham Osborne, as saying that the second report on Daya Bay by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (Harwell) would need 18 months to complete. Nuclear experts from the British Energy Department would soon come to HK to collect information on the safety of the Daya Bay plant.

Sunday, November 2: Deputy chairman of the Guangdong Nuclear Power JVC, William Stones, told reporters after attending a public function yesterday that he believed the Financial Secretary, Piers Jacobs, would present to Legco on Wednesday a detailed report on the Daya Bay project, the media reported.

Mr Stones said that the JVC had provided plenty of information on the project at the request of the HK Government.

Media reports said that the report would contain details including the safety aspect of the plant and the tariff of nuclear power.
