5. INFORMATION REQUESTED FOR PHASE II OF THE STUDY

In accordance with the terms of the consultancy brief, the assessment presented in this report will be refined and extended in Phase II of the study. The refinements will take the form of an improved treatment of meteorology and, possibly, of the population distribution and of any changes in the countermeasures model considered desirable. The extensions of the assessment will comprise the incorporation of terrestial and aquatic food-chain pathways of exposure.

It is appreciated that some of the information requested will not be readily available. Please supply information or estimates to the extent that is reasonably practicable: the assessments in phase II will be made

on an equivalent basis.

A further requirement of Phase II is the performance of sensitivity studies. For this purpose, and in order that a preliminary assessment may be made of which uncertainties are important, it is desirable that, in compiling the information requested in this section, reasonable upper and lower bounds be given for parameters that cannot be specified with reasonable precision.

5.1 Refinement of the Phase I Assessments

(a) Please either confirm that the estimates of projected population distribution and total population, used in section 3, cannot be significantly improved upon, or supply improved estimates. In particular, is our assumption that the rural population is roughly evenly spread throughout the colony a reasonable one? This is only likely to be important if there is a higher or lower than average density of rural population in the parts of the colony closest to the Daya Bay power station.
