Pai Shing Semi-monthly editor Hu Chu-jen said the decision not hold a special meeting would make the public lose confidence in Legco and cause damage to the image of Legco members.

A spokesman for the anti-nuclear lobby, Fung Chi-wood, said that the Government should conduct an opinion survey to ascertain the real public oplulua on the Daya Bay loove.

A Christian group approached Umelco to ask the Government to press for the postponement of the signing of the Daya Bay contracts before the completion of Harwell's Phase II report. The group also hoped that the Governor and Exco members would express HK people's concerns over Daya Bay during their visit to London on September 10.

The Sunday Post, in a front page article, said that the feuding among members of Legco over Daya Bay took a dramatic turn today with the war of words that had divided councillors now likely to be settled in wurt instead of behind closed doors.

The paper said elected councillor, Dr Richard Lal was #eriously considering legal action against his appointed colleague, Allen Lee, for defamation and libel. It said the move is in response to what Dr Lai considers a bitter personal attack against him.

The paper reported that the Governor, Sir Edward Youde and Exco members will leave for London on Monday evening for talks with Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher and top aides. The talks will focus on HK's political reforms and Daya Bay. It said the delegation will urge Mrs Thatcher to pressure Chinese leaders to heed nuclear safety recommendations contained in a report by HK legislators.

Editorially, the HK Daily News said Allen Lee had said that the irresponsible performance of some Legco members had made him change his support for direct elections. The paper said this was an extremely dangerous logle, noting that the recent debates within Legco were healthy and constructive. It felt that only direct elections could bring about democracy.

Monday, September 8: The electronic and print media continued to devote extensive coverage to news and views on the Daya Bay iazua

today.

The dispute between Legco members Richard Lai and Allen Lee arising from the report by the Legco nuclear fact-finding missions was prominently reported in the press today.
