The percentage of respondents opposed to the plant was almost the same when compared with a similar opinion survey conducted two montha ago.

In the latest survey, the five Legco members received about 11 000 questionnaires, 8 860 of them were found to be valid.

Media reports noted that there were more people in favour of the project this time and the proportion was 13 per cent compared with the previous 10 per cent.

One of the Legco members involved in the survey, Dr Richard Lai, told the press that the three per cent increase in support of the project was probably because the people now realised that the plant would be built definitely.

A number of papers, including Sing Tao Jih Pao, Sing Pao, the HK Times and the Express, quoted Dr Lai as saying that he would reflect results of the survey to Chinese leaders during informal conversations in Peking.

Sing Tao quoted a source as saying that Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping had decided on July 11 to go ahead with the Daya Bay project. Details of his decision would be reported in a pro-China magazine in HK in the next few days.

In other developments, a group of people held a press conference yesterday to report on their nuclear fact-finding missions overseas.

A group member and Urban Councillor, Kwan Lim-ho, said they felt that the Daya Bay project should go ahead provided that safety standards laid down by the International Atomic Energy Agency were

met.

Umelco member Maria Tam last night briefed members of the HK Federation of Trade Unions on the report by the Legco nuclear fact-finding delegations.

The FTU stated that it hoped China would consider the report as suggestions contained in it would increase public confidence in the safety aspect of the plant.

Sing Tao reported from Peking that the Legco delegations would be staying in the Diao Yu Tai State Guest House during their visit to Peking this week. It noted that the guest house was normally reserved for visiting heads of state and important government officials.
