Thursday, September 11: Prominent coverage was accorded to the #tatement issued by the Prime Minister's office following a meeting yesterday between the Prime Minister and the Governor and the Exco members. Most papers carried the full statement.

Most papers played up the point that the Prime Minister assured the Exco members that the British Government was fully aware of its responsibilities for the welfare and well-being of HK people, and had stressed the concerns over the Daya Bay issue to the Chinese Government on several occasions .

The statement went on to say that in the light of its discussions with the other governments concerned, the British Government was confident that every effort would be made to ensure that the construction, operation and management of the plant would be carried out to the highest possible safety standards.

Director of NCNA HK branch, Xu Jiatun said yesterday that main contracts for the Daya Bay plant would be signed between September 22 and 25.

Mr Xu said after a public function yesterday that the exact date and venue for the signing ceremony had not yet been decided. He added that members of the Legco fact-finding missions would not be invited to attend the contract-signing ceremony.

Sixty-two DB members from 12 districts and the Social Science Society of the HKU Students Union issued separate statements yesterday calling for a special Legco sitting to debate the Daya Bay issue.

The DB members also asked elected Legco members to state their stand on the subject to their constituencies.

Sing Tao Jih Pao reported that a Government spokesman yesterday reiterated that the Governor had said in the statement issued on September 4 that there was no need to hold a special Legco session to debate the Daya Bay issue at the present circumstances.

The student group stated that the role of the Peking-bound Legco fact-finding missione was not clear as mission members were neither representing the public nor the Legco as a whole.

It hoped the Government would conduct a public opinion survey on the Days Bay issue as soon as possible.
