Today the Institute has 13 laboratories, 3
machine rooms and
a computer centre. The Institute has 700
staff, 300 of whom are at the engineer and lecturer level and
above, and 60 senior staff of the professor level. In addition
there are about 100 persons every year doing research for Master's or Doctorate degrees.

The objectives of the Institute include the training of students and advanced technical staff specialized in nuclear
field
to examine and train operators for nuclear reactors;
study and develop new nuclear technology such as the low temperature reactor; extend and apply nuclear technology industrial and agricultural production.

During our discussion with the Director of the
Institute, Professor WANG Dachong, we asked whether the PWR
(Pressurized Water Reactor) design was outdated. Prof. WANG said
that the PWR design has been tested for a good number of reactors
its safety has been proved.
So The study of years and
called
"safe reactors" are meaningful but at the present moment it is at a conceptual stage. It is not expected to replace the PWR within the present century. On being asked how the PWR compares with other types of reactors Prof. WANG said that the safety features
of the PWR have already been well studied; at the present moment
the BWR (Boiling Water Reactor) and PWR are the two mature types
of commercial reactors. The national policy of China is to
develop PWR.

This reactor performs, among other things, tests on low temperature reactor functions. The
