Another speaker, Legco Unofficial Tai Chin-wah, urged China to provide more information on the Daya Bay project to alleviate public fears.

Chan Man-hung of HKU's Asian Research Centre said since Guangdong province would have sufficient electricity supply in the future as it would join a joint electricity supply scheme with Guangxi province in the 1990s, there was no need for China to build a nuclear plant in Guangdong.

He pointed out that China should build a coal-fired power station at the Daya Bay site as there was an abundant supply of coal from Guangxi province.

The HK Economic Journal said in an editorial that policy-making Chinese officials should receive the anti-nuclear lobby so as to create an open-minded image among the HK public. The paper felt that if the N-plant was to proceed according to plan, the lobby should develop into a standing community organisation to monitor the safety measures at Daya Bay and the contingency plans to be adopted.

The Express believed Chinese officials would reiterate to the anti-nuclear representatives assurances about the safety of nuclear power plants.

HK Economic Journal commentator Chai Sun said the leaking of the Harwell report made people suspect that the confidential document was deliberately leaked by the Government for shirking its responsibility in the project.

Tin Tin Daily News said no one could stop the progress of science. People should shift their attention to the monitoring of safety measures at nuclear power stations.

Tuesday, August 19: Yesterday's meeting between representatives of the Joint Conference for the Shelving of the Daya Bay Project and a team of Chinese officials from the State Council and nuclear authorities in Peking was prominently reported in the electronic and print media.

According to some papers including Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po, the head of the Second Department under the HK and Macau Affairs Office, Rong Kang, said at the meeting that the Chinese Government would respect HK people's views by ensuring the safety of the nuclear plant.

The recent revelation of documents and information relating to the Daya Bay project and the planned nuclear energy exhibition in HK had shown that China had attached importance to public opinion in HK.
