SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRADE AND INDUSTRY'S VISIT TO PARIS, 21 JULY
I am writing to confirm our conversation last week about my Secretary of State's forthcoming visit to Paris. He will be flying out on the afternoon of Monday 21 July for talks with M Madelin who, together with M Balladur, is his French counterpart.
2. I will provide you with details of the agenda for the talks once this has been established. It is our intention that Mr Channon should review with M Madelin current bilateral topics (including the Channel Fixed Link and Guangdong), Presidency priorities, and Community industrial issues, notably steel and shipbuildin. The overall aim of the exchanges will be to establish the sort of good working relationship that Mr Channon has with his German opposite member, Dr Bangemann.
3. As you know, I am liaising directly with the British Embassy in Paris on arrangements for the visit, (with Brian Pullen in John Holmes' absence). I would, however, be grateful if you could provide me with the most recent personality note on M Madelin, and a brief on the French political and economic scene. It would be helpful if this could reach me by Tuesday 15 July.
