Site
After studies by GPC and CLP of a number of sites in Southern Guangdong, they have concluded that a site at Da Keng in Da Ya Bay, about 50km from Hong Kong, is the most appropriate. It is an area away from major centres of population but no infrastructure for a project of this nature is in place. We understand that the Chinese have started site preparation work. We do not anticipate making any comments on the financial aspects of the choice of site.
Choice of Reactor
A PWR has been selected for the nuclear island after consideration of other possibilities, including British Advanced Gas Cooled and Magnox Reactors, Boiling Water Reactors produced by General Electric of the U.S.A. and Heavy Water Reactors such as the Canadian CANDU reactor. Over 50% of the non-communist world's nuclear reactors are PWRS.
CLP and GPC have chosen, as the appropriate size, two three loop PWRS with a capacity of 900mw each and it is planned that 2 x 900mw turbine generators would be fed from the reactors. (We understand from the potential turbine suppliers that the exact size is not finally settled).
Equipment Suppliers
CLP and GPC are proposing that the nuclear island which includes the reactors should be purchased from Frama tome et Cie ("Frama tome") of France and the conventional island of which the turbine generators are the main component from GEC Turbine Generators Limited ("GEC") of Britain. GPC and CLP have had detailed discussions with both parties.
Civils Design
The civils design could be undertaken either by Frama tome and GEC, in respect of the nuclear island and the conventional island respectively, or by an architect-engineer. But to our knowledge no decision has been taken on this important issue, although Frama tome indicated that they would expect to do the civils design for the nuclear island.
