The Ta Kung Pao of 10 May quoted one of those scientists who had been most closely involved in China's nuclear weapons programme, Qian Xuesen, as saying that casualties from China's nuclear tests had been "very, very minimal".

China Daily of 10 May reported that the Chinese were keeping a close watch on radiation levels following the Chernobyl disaster but had detected nothing that might harm the public. It also stated that the Chinese had worked out four safety regulations and rules for design, construction, management, and quality of nuclear plants, although they were not yet on the statute book. Experts had met to discuss the Soviet accident and had drawn up these principles to guide safety measures.
