Under the umbrella of the Patent Cooperation

Treaty, WIPO's collaboration with the Austrian Government

led to the formation in 1973 of the International Patent

Documentation Centre (INPADOC). Its purpose is to provide

an international patent information service. The industrial

property offices of the world collectively issue nearly one

million patent documents a year. Each document contains

bibliographic data items of the same nature which may be used

to identify, classify and retrieve the document. The general

task of INPADOC is to record - in a computer the appropriate

bibliographic data items of patent documents as soon as they

are published, and then to manipulate the recorded information

to provide information services.

The services are designed to provide a quick and

reliable access to patent documents, which themselves constitute

an important part of the world's increasingly complex body

of scientific and technical literature. The various services

offered by INPADOC help to make maximum productive use of

the technological information contained in patent documents.

Bibliographic data items are recorded by INPADOC in respect

of the patent documents published by the following countries

or organisations: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium,

Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Cyprus, Czechoslovakia,

Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, German Democratic Republic,
