GENERAL

U.S. TRADE POLICY VIS EASTERN EUROPE:

U.S. trade policy towards the nations of Eastern

Europe recognizes that considerable economic, social and

political diversity exists in the region. Consequently,

the United States differentiates its policies vis a vis

individual countries in the region in accordance with

differing national characteristics. U.S. trade relations

are generally better with countries displaying a

relatively large degree of political or economic

independence from the Soviet Union.

THE GATT IN CONTEXT:

In general, the GATT is characterized by a

non-political, non-polemic atmosphere wherein a range of

countries, Developed and Developing, as well as East and

West, are able to adopt a business-like attitude to their
