1. Mr. Ainscow said that UK was glad to have been able to inform the President that the PRC had agreed to take over responsibility for Hong Kong's obligations to the Bank after 1997. The Chinese had also agreed that Hong Kong These favourable moves could purchase shares under GCI III.

Mr. Ainscow congratulated the President on the success of his and the Bank's patient efforts to achieve Chinese membership without losing Taiwan, and therefore without detriment to the Bank. President Fujioka explained that there had been discussion with both China and Taiwan about the terms of which the latter could/would attend the Annual Meeting, but that this could not be resolved. Taiwan was not, however, intending to withdraw from the Bank. It had wanted to participate in the ASDF discussions, but in the end did not come. Taiwan will continue to participate in Bank activities, including procurement and staffing. The President did not know whether Taiwan would
