institutions in operation, compared with 456

at the end of December 1985. As at end-September, there were 149 licensed banks, 37 licensed deposit-taking companies, and 260 registered deposit-taking companies in operation (5).

Negotiable certificates of deposit

Low local interest rates in the third

quarter continued to provide a favourable environment for the issuers of negotiable certificates of deposit, particularly for the

issue of certificates with fixed rates. At the end of

September 1986 the outstanding value of negotiable certificates of deposit issued by deposit-taking institutions

During this nine-month period, ten new bank licences were granted and eight new deposit-taking companies were registered. During the same period, one bank licence was revoked at the request of the bank concerned, and two other bank licences were revoked as a result of reorganisation of the banks involved. Also, 24 deposit-taking companies had their registrations revoked, of which 22 were revoked at the request of the companies concerned. Two registered deposit-taking companies were granted the status of deposit-taking companies.
