The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre

The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, due to be opened in the Summer of 1986, has been designed to offer the finest facilities to the meeting planner. Accommodation for 880 people in the Churchill auditorium and over 1,200 in the Fleming and Whittle rooms combine to offer the highest standards of modern conference facility.

Particular attention has been paid to the need for flexible meeting areas, in addition to three main halls; with 11 lounge and working areas, four other conference rooms and over 80 smaller suites of varying sizes, this building offers a comprehensive and adaptable range of accommodation.

As befits a building of such international importance the standards of furnishings and fittings, including the many original works of art, are unmatched. The major rooms have been named after famous Britons who have made a significant contribution to modern society.

Location

The setting of The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre is as impressive as its architecture; looking out from the windows over 13 centuries of

ecclesiastical history, represented by Westminster Abbey, one begins to

appreciate the panorama of its historical surroundings.

Situated in Westminster, within sight of the Houses of Parliament, the Centre is the result of painstaking research and careful planning.

In front of the building is the site of one of the world's first publishing houses, founded by Caxton, toward the end of the 15th Century, and across Parliament Square is St Stephen's Tower, known throughout the world as Big Ben.

Ground Floor

Main entrance at street level into Sanctuary Foyer; Press entrance at street level into West Foyer. Cloakroom and registration facilities. Conference organisers room and access to control rooms. Public telephones situated throughout the building. Churchill Auditorium main doors lead into Sanctuary and West Foyers. The auditorium floor is gently raked with no fixed seating. Projection/Engineers room. Provision has been made to display a large car on stage. Equipment loading bay and goods lift. First Floor

Linked to ground floor by nine lifts (throughout the building) and a main staircase. Press Suite has direct access by stair up to Caxton Lounge. Telex room, paper reproduction room and distribution counter.

Second Floor

Caxton Lounge with direct access by stair down to Press Suite; fitted with bar. Restaurant and refreshment area. Four radio broadcasting rooms. Direct stair access up to Benjamin Britten Lounge.

Third Floor

Fleming and Whittle Rooms divided by soundproofed doors; the floor is level in both rooms and the seating is variable. Projection/Engineers' room. Abbey Dining Room on mezzanine has direct access by stair to Benjamin Britten Lounge which enjoys views of Westminster Abbey and Parliament. Henry Moore and Rutherford Rooms can be used independently or with their own suite of four rooms.

Fourth Floor

Open plan secretariat/office area with separate integral lounge. 23 delegate and 9 secretariat rooms all interchangeable; these rooms can be hired as a whole suite or individually. Paper reproduction (off-set litho) and photocopying room. Views of internal courtyard and garden area from four sides.

Fifth Floor

Suite of ten rooms hired individually or as a suite. Views of internal courtyard and garden. Linked through to the ground floor by 9 lifts.

Facilities and Services

WATERLOO

The electronic specification incorporates the most up-to-date state of the art technology, which includes CCTV to broadcast standard, 12 channels of SI (recognised as one of the finest facilities in the world), broadcast specification TV studios, radio broadcast facilities, 16/ 35mm projection and provision for eidophor.

Clients hiring The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre will have the choice of using installed equipment or bringing in material of their own specification.

One of the many outstanding features is the security throughout the Centre which has been designed with the aim of providing privacy and security for events and meetings held in the building. Paper reproduction is available through off-set litho and photocopying centres in the building.

Air conditioning can be set in the building to clients' requirements and particular attention has been paid to soundproofing, lighting and delegate comfort. Colour coded floor levels ease recognition of meeting areas.

There is a restaurant with 200 seats and a specially furnished VIP dining area, the Abbey room.
