XU JIATUN: VISIT TO EUROPE
1.
―
At HKD request Mr JCH Marriott (card attached) called on Mr Hum and myself this morning to discuss a programme for Xu's visit. He provided an itinerary also attached. He felt there was still some uncertainty as to whether the trip would in fact "come off", but provided the other details that he possessed thus far:
May
(a) 12-14 inclusive to be in London, Montcalm Hotel (Gt Cumberland
Place), lightish programme, only appointment so far being lunch with Halller on 13 May, followed by PM's Question Time.
Памя
(b) 15-17, inclusive. North of England, organised by Cha, visiting
Cha's factory in Cheshire, staying in Lygan Arms (?). He would meet Xu and party at Heathrow on 11 May.
(c) Contact at Chinese Embassy would be Madam Zhang Yu-yuan.
Davist
He was amenable to discussing a lightish FCO programme to cover the first three days, and accepted the following suggestions:
2.
(a) FCO calls (part-day);
(b) Academic-cum-tourist
visit to Cambridge (one day);
(c) London tour, including river trip down to Thames Barrier (one day).
3. He wished to consult Hal Miller on other possibilities: meeting with all or part of Hong Kong Parliamentary Group, Lord MacLehose, and Hong Kong Association. He would revert to us as soon as possible: he did not intend to consult Cha or
Xu.
4.
After his departure, we agreed tentatively on a 3-day programme to cover:
(a) 12 May - London tour plus lunch or dinner with Mr Renton
if feasible;
(b) 13 May
-
Call on Mr Renton and Dr Wilson am, followed by
5.
Commons;
(c) 14 May Visit Cambridge.
Mr Hum would consult PS/Mr Renton on a lunch or dinner; and I would consult COI on arrangements for a Cat III 3-day visit, and Research Department on possible arrangements for Xu to visit prominent Sinologists/Hong Kong experts in Cambridge.
