We have already spoken about the Defence Committee's request for written briefing and it was agreed that some introductory
This afternoon material could be provided in advance of the visit. the Clerk raised the question of both MOD and FCO giving an oral briefing during the week preceding the visit; Tuesday 18th or Wednesday 19th were the dates he specifically mentioned. The idea would be to let the Committee have the written briefing about a week earlier and the oral session would then supplement this and allow members the opportunity to raise any questions which they may
have.
I should imagine that the briefing would focus largely on the Hong Kong element of the programme although I know that the Committee would appreciate a pre-Exercise briefing on SAIF SAREEA and some background information on British military assistance to Oman. On Diego Garcia there is probably not a great deal to offer although we could perhaps brief on the formal relationship between Britain and the United States.
Earlier this year the Committee received an oral briefing prior to their visit to the Falkland Islands. This was chaired by AUS (DS) and was held in a Committee Room in the House; it lasted about 45 minutes. I believe we should assume a similar arrangement. Perhaps when thought has been given to the composition of the team you will let me know.
