From The Minister of State

18 September 1986

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your letter of 5 September addressed to Geoffrey Howe's Private Secretary.

We have informed posts in the various countries you intend to visit of your plans, and also the Governor of Hong Kong. I understand that in view of time constraints our Hong Kong Department have already been in touch with you by telephone about arrangements for meetings in Tokyo with the Ambassador, Sir Sydney Giffard and in Hong Kong with the Governor, Sir Edward Youde.

As far as your visit to Israel is concerned, our Ambassador in Tel Aviv Bill Squire understands that the organisers of the seminar you are attending will look after the administrative arrangements. He would however be delighted to offer you hospitality at some stage during your visit, eg dinner/accommodation on 30 October, the date after the seminar ends. Perhaps you could let Mr Adam Thomson of our Near East and North African Department (on 233 4856) know if this would be convenient for you.

I believe that you are in direct touch with Sir Robert Wade-Gery about your visit to India in December. If there is anything we can do to assist you please let me know.

Thank you for your offer to speak to officials on our behalf. Should there be anything you can do I will of course let you know.

Good travelling, and

Yous
