Dear Private Secretary,

September 5th, 1986

I thought that the Foreign Secretary and the appropriate Heads of Department

might be interested to know that on September 18th-22nd I shall be in Japan in connection

with the establishment of a new Japanese-Cambridge educational foundation with Mr Heath and

Sir John Butterfield and in Hong Kong on the 22nd to 24th. On October 25th-November 1st I

will be in Israel, principally to take part with President Hertzog in a public seminar on the

thirtieth anniversary of the Suez Crisis organised by the University of Beersheva, but I also

intend to go to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. At the end of December my wife and I will be

visiting India; although this is a holiday we shall be staying with the Wade-Gerys in Delhi

at some stage, and Robert is very kindly organising some meetings with Indian politicians and

officials. I was born in India, where I lived for elevent years, and my father was a senior

officer in the old Indian Army (the Punjabis).

If it were possible I should like to call on the Governor in Hong Kong, as he

was Head of Chancery at the UK Mission to the UN when I was involved in its activities and

first met him. As this is my first visit to Hong Kong, where I shall be staying with British

business friends, I should welcome a talk with him about the situation if this could be

arranged.

If the Secretary of State or others in the Office wished me to make particula

points or call on particular officials or others I should be very willing to do so.

Yours sincerely,

Потії Пати

The Private Secretary to the Secretary of State,

Foreign and Commonwealth Office

James
