19.
Visits to Burma and Brunei were recommended, possibly in conjunction with Hong Kong which was a high priority. It would probably not be feasible to include China in the same tour, as this would make the journey too long.
20. The Troika Ministerial meeting in either Tunisia or Belgium of the Euro-Arab dialogue should be for Mr Renton to attend, rather than the Secretary of State, if and when a meeting place and dates are agreed. It was agreed that the proposed visit to Yugoslavia would depend on the timing of the Prime Minister's proposed visit.
21. It was suggested that a visit to India might not be necessary, since the Special Representatives exercise was making no progress. There was also a proposal that Mr Eggar might visit certain South Asian countries early next year. It was recommended that Mr Renton should attend the UN First Committee Meeting on disarmament in late 1987.
22.
It was noted that a return visit to Czechoslovakia should be made in 1987, if dates could not be found in 1986; but this, and the possibility of a visit to Poland, would be dependent on certain factors - see para 8 above.
23. If Mr Renton was found to have sufficient free time available, the Sub-Committee recommended that visits should be considered to the smaller Gulf states, possibly during the September parliamentary
recess.
Mr Eggar
24. Proposals for visits by Mr Eggar are at Annex G. The Sub-Committee strongly recommend visits early in 1987 to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and, should time be available, Sri Lanka, as follow-up to the introduction of the new visa regime.
25.
The proposal for Mr Eggar to visit the UN in Geneva, the Sub-Committee considered, should be regarded as probable and desirable, which conclusion also applies to the South Pacific Conference and associated visit to the Islands. The Sub-Committee thought that Lady Young or Mr Eggar should attend the Council of Europe Meeting in Strasbourg, depending upon other commitments.
26. In view of his responsibilities for drugs matters,
it was thought that Mr Eggar might attend the Miami Conference in November, if Lady Young is unable to go. Also in connection with drugs, it was suggested that Mr Eggar might visit South East Asia, if such a trip could be fitted in to his schedule. He might in addition make some drugs-related visits to Latin America, if suitable possibilities were to arise.
