The Secretary of State was grateful for your minute of 18 December. He thinks that on reflection he will abandon the idea of accompanying Her Majesty The Queen to Berlin: it would be too rushed to try to fit this in with a Far Eastern visit. He may conceivably go to Berlin for a regular Berlin meeting before the Reykjavik NAC.

He is doubtful about the wisdom of going to the Philippines after Japan. This is primarily because it is too close to Hong Kong, and to go to the Philippines without going to Hong Kong after visiting Peking would look like a gratuitous insult to Hong Kong.

He wonders whether it would be possible to fit in a visit to Sri Lanka on the way home from Tokyo. I should be most grateful if SAD could consider this and advise.

He agrees that it might be worth considering a bilateral visit to Jordan over a weekend, preferably when the weather there is not too hot. Please consider possible dates.
