1. Thank you for this helpful telegram.
2. Mr Renton is largely content with the Peking
programme as proposed. However, he would greatly
prefer to avoid a three hour plus session of talks on
18 January after a long and tiring journey.

therefore revert to the MFA on the basis of two rounds,
the first from, say, 1430 1600 hours on 18 January,
the second from 0900 1100 hours on 20 January.
Mr Renton would welcome meetings with Embassy Heads of
Sections (your telno 47) but requirement for second
round of talks on 20 January rules out suggested timing.
He would prefer these to be arranged on ad hoc basis.
