Dar John,

CONTACTS BETWEEN UNOFFICIALS AND THE NCNATM

1. You will be interested to read the enclosed copies

of of records

Sir S calls which

Y Chung paid yesterday on the Secretary of State and Mr Renton.

2.

aware

that

the

time from

to time

We

Both David Wilson and I were struck by Sir S Y's references to regular monthly meals which he and certain other Unofficials had with Xu Jiatun and his deputy.

there were were

larger, rather uneasy occasions involving larger numbers of the Unofficials and the NCNA staff. But we had not realised that there were also these more restricted and regular contacts. It is rather encouraging that such a pattern of exchanges should have been established.

3.

We should be most interested in any background which you could give us. For how long have the regular meals been taking place? Any information which you are able to pass to

us about discussion on those occasions would of course be of very great interest.

You

eve,
