As far as Hu Yaobang's own personal image is concerned, his statesmanship was underlined by the publication in full on the front page of People's Daily of his speech to the Royal Institute of International Affairs. There also appeared to be a deliberate attempt to add the human touch, Hu sitting in Marx's seat at the British Museum, quizzing young schoolgirls in Stratford-on-Avon, and engaging in philosophical discussion with the Prime Minister about "Adam Smith and Karl Marx.
