It is my good pleasure to meet you, friends from the

press. You in the press carry a great responsibility in

the mass media. I wish to express my heart felt thanks

to you for your hard work in covering my current visit.

Though my visit to Britain is short it has left a very

deep impression on me. I have been accorded a

welcome and the gracious hospitality by

Prime Minister Thatcher and the government and people of

the various circles of Britain. I am keenly impressed

that like China the UK greatly treasures its ancient

history and the cultural heritage. The people of Britain

have, through efforts of generations made enormous

achievements in economic, scientific, technological and

the cultural fields. During the visit

Prime Minister Thatcher and I myself held very sincere

and friendly talks. Vice Premier Li Peng, Vice Chairman

Fei Xiaotong and I myself also entered into extensive

contacts with people of various circles in your country.

I am deeply aware that the present British government and

general public cherish the desire to further develop

friendly relations and co-operation with China. All this

has made me more confident about bright prospects of

Now I am ready to take up your

Sino-British relations.
