SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO BRUSSELS ON 23 MAY:
POSSIBLE MEETING WITH MR TINDEMANS
A
1. Mr Coltman (Head of Chancery, Brussels) telephoned on
7 May to report that Mr Tindemans is committed to talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister from 1500 - 1800 on 23 May. The talks are to be held in the Egmont Palace. Given that the Secretary of State's lunch with the Chinese Foreign Minister is not due to finish until 1430 the only possible time for a call on Tindemans would be in the morning. The Embassy
have not yet been able to ask Lord Carrington's office if he could see the Secretary of State in the afternoon (the appointment is currently fixed for 1100 - 1200).
2. Mr Coltman was inclined to think that the Secretary of State has observed the indispensable courtesies vis-à-vis the Belgians by offering to call on Tindemans and that we need not ask Lord Carrington if he could see the Secretary of
State after lunch.
3.
Grateful to know if the Secretary of State agrees.
HKK 0261.
