Your colleague Mr Fei Xiaotong, old friend of

Britain.

His links with us go back some time

1981 he was awarded distinguished Thomas Huxley

Prize by Royal Anthropology Institute.

As well as big joint industrial projects Britain keen

to promote practical cooperation on a human scale. For

example:

famous British double decker buses now run between

Central Peking and Summer Palace

British scientists joined colleagues from China

and Pakistan in pioneering International Karakoram

Project to survey roof of world

British deer from world's last surviving herd in

Britain of rare Père David's deer reintroduced

this year to China

we are pushing ahead with this sort of cooperation.

This afternoon, Vice-Premier Li Peng signed with

Sir Y K Pao and Sir Geoffrey Howe a Memorandum of

Understanding to establish major new scheme to bring

Chinese students to study in Britain. Scheme arose

from imagination and generosity of Sir Y K. Must thank

him. Could bring several hundred extra Chinese

students to Britain a year, on top of 1200 now studying

in British universities and colleges

already

unprecendented number.
