VISIT BY GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CHINA : GIFTS FROM PRIME MINISTER AND SECRETARY OF STATE, 8-12 June 1986
Problem
1. What gifts should the Prime Minister and Secretary of State present to Mr Hu Yaobang in June?
Recommendation
2. I recommend that the Prime Minister should give a small burr elm table; and submit a draft letter to No 10. I further recommend that the Secretary of State should give a book on calligraphy.
Background and Argument
3. A hand-carved burr elm square table 500 mm square (table top) and 400 mm in height - would make an elegant gift for Mr Hu, Sir Richard Evans supports the idea (Peking TelNo 616) as do Protocol Department. If agreed, the table would be made by John Makepeace at Parnham House and would cost £600 plus VAT. Mr Thomson, Head of Chancery, Peking, has vouched for the qualiti of the furniture produced at Parnham House.
4. The Chinese Embassy have told us that Mr Hu will also bring a gift for the Secretary of State (a stone carving). As Mr Hu has a particular interest in calligraphy, it would be a nice touch for the Secretary of State to give a book on English script. This would sit nicely on the suggested gift of a burr elm table from the Prime Minister. If the Secretary of State would agree, in principle, we shall submit titles for his approval.
