estimated to be about £1 million in 1985. MOD expenditure on Defence facilities on Ascension Island was estimated at £ll
million for 1985-6. Current FCO expenditure in support our Antarctic policy runs to about £280,000 p.a. There are no
separately identified costs for the other territories under
review;
Economic Aid Total UK aid to these 12 dependent territories in 1984 was 1.36% of the total British aid budget and
amounted to £14.4 million. This is not a large figure and £11.4 million of the total went to two Dependent Territories,
Turks and Caicos Islands and St Helena. The aid
given is higher in per capita terms than other British aid to
non Commonwealth and independent Commonwealth territories.
In 1983 for all dependent territories including the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and Hong Kong it amounted to £4.91 per
capita. In the other cases (ie British aid to non Common-
wealth territories and independent Commonwealth territories) it came to £0.07 and £0.40 respectively, (latter figure is heavily weighted by the inclusion of the Sub-Continent).
comparison, UK aid to the Eastern Caribbean Commonwealth
countries in 1984 amounted to £2.44 per capita which demonstrates that even after independence, Caribbean islands receive a high per capita rate of aid, several times more than the Commonwealth average;
Budgetary: The United Kingdom provides aid to Anguilla,
In
St Helena and Dependencies and the Turks and Caicos Islands. This amounted in 1984 £7.13 million pounds;
-
Trade 98.5% of the UK's imports from the dependent territories in 1984 came from Hong Kong, which also took
95.5% of UK exports to dependent territories. UK imports from the 12 territories under consideration totalled £18
million and exports to them totalled £42 million.
