Distinct from the zones, cities and regions mentioned above, other Economic Zones have been set up in order to break down internal administrative barriers and facilitate integrated and inter-regional development over large areas. The most important of these, the Shanghai Economic Zone and the Pearl River Delta Zone, were established in 1983. The former was enlarged in December 1984 to include all the cities of its hinterland provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi. The Shanghai Economic Zone covers 516,000 square kilometres and accounts for a fifth of China's population and a quarter of its total output. The Pearl River Delta Zone is centred on Canton and takes in 17 cities and counties. has a population of 11 million and an area of 15,000 square kilometres. It accounts for about 60 per cent of Guangdong Province's exports, a third of agricultural output and half of its export volume.

23. Other economic zones were set up in 1985 and 1986. The North- east Economic Zone is to coordinate development in Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang and parts of Inner Mongolia. Centred in Shenyang,
it has a population of 102 million, an area of 1,240,000 square kilometres and its gross output value in 1984 accounted for 15 per cent of China's total. The smaller Huaihai Economic Zone covers 159,000 square kilometres to the north of the Yangtze Delta coastal region. Centred in Xuzhou, it includes parts of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui Provinces. The Yellow River Delta Economic Zone covers 7,400 square kilometres in Shandong Province. It is centred on the city of Dongying.
