1. Mr Renton has seen your submission of 30 October. agrees that we should go for the calendar year for the next Annual Report to Parliament on Hong Kong. He is also content with the suggestion in your para 7 on the content of the report.

Given parliamentary sensitivities, Mr Renton thinks it would be right to tell Lord Maclehose and Paddy Ashdown MP of our intentions, and to assure them that there is no worrying reason for delaying publication of the report until early 1987. He is content for you to speak to
Lord Maclehose, but would be grateful for a short draft letter to send to Mr Ashdown. Thereafter, he would be glad to answer an inspired PQ.
