the Hong Kong Polytechnic. The royal couple then toured
a trade exhibition, featuring a wide-range of Hong Kong's
manufactured products, following which Her Majesty laid
the foundation stone of the Hong Kong Convention and
Exhibition Centre. In the evening the royal couple were
entertained by a variety spectacular involving 6,400 young
performers who played, sang, performed acrobatics, ballet
and traditional dance.

The second day of the royal visit was designated
a public holiday in Hong Kong. The royal couple visited
Sharin only a large fishing village at the time of their
previous visit in 1975 but now a city with a population of
over 350,000 people. Her Majesty toured a public housing
estate and met a family living in one of the flats built
under the Hong Kong Housing Authority's Home Ownership
Scheme. Following lunch with members of the Regional
Council and the Chairmen of the New Territories District
Boards, at the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club's Shain Race
Course, Her Majesty watched the running of three races of
the afternoon meeting; including the "Queen Elizabeth
Cup".
