Triad influence or gang activities in schools

School principals continued to report to the Police cases of suspected triad activities involving students in the schools. With the co-operation of the principals, the Police have cracked down on some gangs which had forced school children to become their members.

Two seminars and six workshops on the promotion of moral education for 655 primary school teachers were organised in May and June 1985. A workshop and a seminar on the promotion of moral education for 112 and 60 secondary school teachers were organised in May and October 1985 respectively. The Religious/Ethical Education Display Centre continued to provide reference and resouce materials for serving teachers as well as students of colleges of education.

The "Design and Aid" project, which was launched by the colleges of education early this year as a part of students' activities in the moral education programme, received a good response from the students. Organised by ICAC and the colleges of education, this project extended from February to July 1985 and covered a range of activities including talks, demonstrations, preparation and production of teaching aids and exhibitions. Some 300 full-time and part-time students of the colleges of education were involved in the project. A total of 1026 visitors attended a three-day exhibition and a prize-giving ceremony was held in July 1985.

Curriculum development Social Studies Programmes of the Education Television Service (ETV) on moral issues have been extended to cover the Form/Middle III level and programmes for Form/Middle I and II continue to be broadcast. Inspectors of the Advisory Inspectorate participated in the preparation of the ICAC "Senior Social Morality Programme". The programme, 'The Way Ahead', to be tried out in thirteen pilot schools and in one of the colleges of education, is in its final stage of production.

A teaching kit, produced by the Education Department, was made available to all secondary and primary schools in December 1984. Evaluation and a survey on the use of the teaching kit was carried out in July 1985. The pamphlet entitled 'Reference Materials on Moral Education Issue III', published by the Education Department, was made available to all primary and secondary schools in August 1985.
