With Daya Bay having moved from centre stage there is no single focus of attention. The issue of direct elections occupies much of the media's attention but excites little comment or reaction from the bulk of the population who are more interested in getting on with their daily lives. Nothing other than Daya Bay has occurred seriously to undermine confidence during the period. Meanwhile the Hong Kong stock market has proved attractive to overseas investors and there has been an encouraging improvement in industrial investment since the beginning of the year. As measured by growth of retained imports, investment in industrial machinery has increased by 41% in monetary terms for January-June 1986 compared with the same period in 1985. In real terms, the increase is 17% for January-June 1986 compared with the same period in 1985.
The Royal Visit
17.
Despite some critical comment within the expatriate community and in the English language press the Queen's visit to Hong Kong was well recieved by the local populace. As the visit proceeded so the warmth of the reception accorded to Her Majesty increased. The reception was more mature than in 1975 in the sense that there was less flag-waving but there were notable moments of spontaneity. The visit to Shatin,
for instance, attracted crowds of up to 200,000 people.
