HONG KONG: CALL ON THE SECRETARY OF STATE BY MESSRS LI KA-SHING AND
SIMON MURRAY, CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF HUTCHISON WHAMPOA
LTD AT 11.30 ON 29 OCTOBER.
1.
Messrs Li Ka-shing and Simon Murray, respectively Chairman and Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, will call on the Secretary of State at 11.30 on 29 October. They will be accompanied
by Lord Derwent, Managing Director of the company's European operations. After their call
call on the Secretary of State they will
call briefly on Mr Gillmore and Dr Wilson. The Secretary of State
may therefore wish Mr Gillmore to attend.
2. I understand that Mr Li's visit has been arranged through Party
channels, and that while in the UK he will also see Mr Tebbit and
Mr Hurd. He and Mr Murray will also lunch at No 10 on 29 October, along with other industrialists.

I submit briefing for the call. We understand that this is
essentially a courtesy call, and that Mr Li has no particular matters to raise. We have consulted the Governor of Hong Kong on whether there are any recent developments regarding either visitor of which the secretary of State should be aware. The Governor has brought us up to date on Li's reaction to the recent Report of the Hong Kong Insider Dealings Tribunal, and background
and background on this aspect is included in the briefing.
