Avljeg Taken
It was a great pleasure and an honour for me to meet you în London during my recent visit and I am most grateful to you for providing me so much of your valuable time.
The subject of direct elections in Kong Kong is extremely sensitive and whilst undoubtedly the British Government must make a gesture in this direction, too much on a general scale could be damaging between China and Great Britain since the signing of the Agreement.
We remain confident of the future in Hong Kong, largely due to the good sense and willingness of both sides to search for cooperation and understanding in the interests of each other.
The Queen's visit was an enormous success both in China and in Hong Kong and added to the warmth of the relationship that has developed between the two countries.
The policies you and Mrs. Thatcher are pursuing are undoubt- edly a success. We will continue to seek investment opportun- ities in the UK and where possible support UK manufacturers in our purchasing programme, which I hope in a small way will make a contribution to supporting the interest of all parties.
