In doing so you may like to prepare yourselves for possible questioning on events in later years which hinge on the opinion expressed by the Law Officers in 1948. For example, in the CHAN HING case in 1958 it was decided with the Secretary of State's concurrence, to adopt the opposite view (see Hong Kong telno 219, 220 and 221 and the FCO reply no 257, all of March 1958): the same was true of the WONG HON case in 1959 (Hong Kong Law Reports 1959 Page 601). The "researcher" referred to in your letter may be on to a good story. See also "Unequal Treaty" by Peter Wesley Smith, pages 168-171, for good measure!
